Item Description
13.25x23.25" w/11.5x21.5" opening. Considered the first Confederate imprint, this broadside is a truly remarkable piece of American history. Three days after Lincoln's election South Carolina Gov. Francis Wilkinson Pickens scheduled a convention to consider secession. On Dec. 20, 1860, 169 delegates from around South Carolina gathered in Charleston and voted unanimously to break from the Union. Messengers from the pro-secession Charleston Mercury News reached the editors quickly and within 15 minutes of the vote the breaking news was being pressed onto paper "...Our Extras, Containing The Long Looked For Ordinance, Were Being Thrown Off The Fast Presses And Distributed Among The Eager Multitude That Thronged Under The Great Banner Of The 'Southern Confederacy'", noted editors of the paper. These treasured artifacts were made in voluminous numbers, but the thin paper combined with the tumultuous era and ravages of the following 162 years have left few surviving examples, many of which are housed in institutions. The present evenly age toned specimen has been professionally conserved stabilizing deep vertical and horizontal folds and filling in scattered areas including painting of parts of the "On" in "Charleston" and areas of lettering affected by the vertical crease. Technically Good but displaying nicely as professionally framed and retaining a powerful presence matching the magnitude of the news it publishes.
