Item Description
Large 15x22" artboard features pen and ink original art for the cover to Famous Funnies #217, published by Eastern Color in May 1955. Frank Frazetta had provided Buck Rogers cover art for many issues of Famous Funnies and submitted cover art for this issue (the second from the last issue of the series) as well, but it was rejected for being too violent (this issue saw the first application of the newly introduced Comics Code Authority). Frazetta's submitted art was then utilized for the cover to EC Comics' Weird Science-Fantasy #29. Eastern Color published this cover art by Mike Roy for Famous Funnies #217. This was the final issue of Famous Funnies to feature Buck Rogers on the cover and art shows Buck Rogers in the cockpit of a craft w/three other men as they overlook a rocketship launch site. Top of artboard has applied "Famous Funnies Featuring Buck Rogers" title stat and has inked issue number and publication month as well as the 10¢ cover price. Center right has "This Is A Famous Funnies Publication" applied stat. Lower left has small signature of Roy, which was trimmed from final publication (but is seen on the 1962 edition published in Mexico). Top margin has "Add Rocket Rangers - F.F. Seal" handwritten text in pencil and upper right margin has handwritten editorial notation in pencil. Back of artboard has Comic Code Authority inkstamp w/inked date and initials. Artboard has some scattered aging and handling wear w/three noticeable spots of staining, each approx. .5" to .75" in size; just right of top center, to right of "Funnies" portion of title stat and at bottom margin at left. None of these infringe upon main image area. Fine overall. Both Buck Rogers and Famous Funnies cover art rarely come up for sale. Gene Seger Buck Rogers Collection.
