Item Description
Original 8x10" nice quality silver gelatin glossy photo. Team is shown in uniform and posed on a ball field. Attached to reverse is text strip including all player names and mention of their championship season along w/ink stamp date of Jan. 2, 1944. Martin Dihigo stands at center. Also shown are manager Mike Gonzalez along with team members: Cocaina Garcia, Julio Rojo, Lloyd Davenport, Rodolfo Fernandez, Gilberto Torres, Carlos Blanco and Herberto Blanco. Dihigo was widely recognized as being the best two-way player in Negro League baseball history, Martin played for many years in Cuba during the winters while becoming a stalwart of Negro League baseball in the U.S. during the summer, starring initially for the New York Cuban Stars before brief stays with the Homestead Grays and Hilldale Daisies ball clubs during the late 1920s and early 1930s before returning to the Cuban Stars to finish out his U.S. career. Dihigo would spend another decade playing internationally, including time in Mexico, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Cuba throughout the 1940s. Photographer's mark "Novoa" at lower right of image. Has horizontal crease above and below the team image. Other noticeable handling wear especially along top margin. Photo remains clean and image is strong and bold. Good. Adding to the provenance of this wonderful piece is that fact that it was once owned by Martin Dihigo himself and appeared in Hake's July 2015 auction along with a number of other memorabilia items which came directly from the Dihigo Estate. Photograph has been authenticated and encapsulated by PSA as a Type I original.
