Item Description
Original 6.25x24.75x4-5/8" deep cardboard box w/lid label featuring image of Superman pulling apart chains at his wrist as opposed to breaking across his chest as typically depicted at the time. Box contains game No. 530 designed by Arthur Dritz and produced by American Toy Works in the early 1940s. © Superman Inc. Box lid has slight inward warp and lid label has some scattered minor color rubs. Box bottom has some scattered insect damage to paper covering box, mainly on inner wrap portion at left. Scattered aging/dust soiling and edge wear w/some areas of bare cardboard visible, but box retains its shape and is Fine overall. Lid label remains bright and clean and is Fine/VF. Game consists of 4.5x10" painted wood base w/attached 7.75" tall arms that support 24" long wooden board w/attached die-cut cardboard piece attached to front to give it the appearance of a bridge. This board holds four 3.5" long wooden blocks w/slots containing die-cut cardboard armored cars and tanks (two of each, w/different colors and point values). Front of toy features nearly 8" tall die-cut cardboard piece w/wonderfully illustrated image depicting full body image of Superman, as if he is supporting the bridge. Bottom of this piece has "Superman Action Game" name as well as "No. 530" and game designer/maker names. During play, bridge would rock back and forth to expose another tank/car when one was shot off. Comes w/7.5" long black pressed steel Wyandotte gun (as issued) and four rubber-tipper suction cup darts. Original instruction sheet is included. Some lt. handling wear w/faint crease. VF. Game shows some lt. scattered wear w/edge wear to Superman and bridge base. Superman figure also has some oxidation to tiny nails used to attached to wooden backing. Two tiny screws missing, but not needed for use of display and game is o/w complete. VF overall w/bright color. One of the best designed, rarest and most sought after of all Superman toys. Just the second we've offered in our 54 years, our prior example selling for $5,692 despite having lower grade box and missing gun and darts.
