Item Description
Cartoons and illustrations by Gahan Wilson (1930-2019) feature a playfully grotesque style and have a dark humor that is often compared to the work of "Addams Family" creator Charles Addams. Inspired by the irreverent work of the various satiric "Mad" and "Punch cartoonists," as well as 1950s Sci-Fi monster films, his cartoons and prose fiction appeared regularly in "Playboy, Collier's" and "The New Yorker" for almost 50 years. Offered here is 9-5/8x17.75" sheet (in a size larger than Gahan typically worked) featuring intricate pen and ink original art that has been watercolored. Art was commissioned by a Des Moines, IA advertising firm for Applied Communications Inc. (AOC, out of Omaha, NE), c. 1985 and this and following four lots were published in a brochure for financial advertising. Wilson's distinct style is on display in this piece, which shows busy scene w/four businessmen receiving order of suspenders from deliveryman. Desk has "Operations" placard on it while package sat next to it is marked "Support Package," suggesting that support package delivery would simplify computer operations. Lower left has been boldly signed in black ink by Wilson. Typical rippling to paper from watercoloring but Exc. overall. Art comes from the art director in charge of this 1980s campaign, who saved the art. This is the first time this and the following lots of Gahan Wilson art are being offered at auction.
