Item Description
This incredible one of a kind prototype premium was designed by Orin Armstrong for Robbins Co. to present to the executives of Peter Pan peanut butter, the "Sky King" radio show's sponsor. This is the actual example shown in "The Official Price Guide To Pop Culture Memorabilia" by Ted Hake and comes with COA. Originally listed w/a date of 1948, that date requires a revision to 1950-1951. Book description says "with decoder symbols on the back" and this is true as there is a large circle at center containing numbers 1 through 26. We are revising the date because this circle is stamped on a distinctive die-cut sheet of aluminum identical to the aluminum plate on the reverse of the 1951 issued Space Patrol Jet Glow belt buckle w/reverse decoder. Aluminum on this Sky King prototype is held by two rivets to a rectangular heavy brass compartment 1-3/8" wide by 2.25" long w/open front area to serve as a secret compartment w/depth of .25". Brass retains much luster. Buckle's front is another sheet of heavy brass w/turned upper/lower edges, creating a channel to allow it to slide. An internal metal stop keeps the front plate from being completely removable. We now get to the wonderful part of this creation. Glued to the front metal panel is a thin sheet of cardboard showing the gorgeous hand-painted (likely acrylic) original art design featuring symbolic wings flanking a crown w/the "Sky King" name. Below the large stylized initials "S" and "K" flanking a panel w/an example serial number of "3970743." Art has couple near microscopic tiny paint chips off a hairline along the upper/lower borders and a mere speck off the letter "K," but all this is exceedingly minor and the item is in Exc. condition overall in addition to being beautifully crafted and unique.
