Item Description
Fantastic 12x16.5x5" deep carved and painted wood shadow box features image used for movie poster for the 1933 Mickey Mouse animated short "Ye Olden Days." Wonderful details include Minnie Mouse tossing flower to Mickey, donkeys livery, individually carved letters for title, etc. Top and bottom front of display have separately carved, painted and attached plaques reading "Joseph M. Schenck Presents Walt Disney's" and "1933" date. For a wealth of information on and images of many of the artist's wonderful creations, visit noted collector Mel Birnkrant's outstanding "Mouse Heaven" website (melbirnkrant.com) and select the "Charles Ponstingl" section. Produced as part of a series of these folk art carvings in 1998, back of shadow box is numbered and dated "No. 134 - 8/21/98" and also had additional pencil text which was scratched off which most likely included Ponstingl's name. Some third party dealers did this so their customers, would not know who made the item and try to contact the artist directly. Front displays NM. Each of these carvings are unique as Ponstingl only made one of each, and examples are very rarely offered for sale. This is the first we've seen any outside of Birnkrant's collection and is the only example we have ever offered.
