Item Description
Clifford Berryman (1869-1949) was the main editorial cartoonist for the now defunct "Washington Evening Star" - which for the first half of the 20th Century, was the leading newspaper in Washington, DC - working there from 1907 until his death. He has previously worked as the main cartoonist of the "Washington Post," starting in 1896. Winner of the 1944 Pulitzer Prize (among many awards accumulated over his long career), Berryman's claim to fame is being the one who originated the idea of a Teddy Bear, named after President Theodore Roosevelt in a 1902 cartoon that showed Roosevelt refusing to shoot a bear cub. The Teddy Bear became a sensation, sparking the eponymous doll, as well as Berryman having a small Teddy Bear as a mascot in many of his cartoons. Offered here is the original art for three political cartoons, all concerning NY Senator Royal Copeland. Two show Copeland w/Al Smith, former Governor of New York and ill-fated Democratic candidate in the 1928 Presidential Election. The third cartoon shows the Tammany Tiger standing behind Copeland. Though originated by fellow cartoonist Thomas Nast in 1871 to spotlight New York City corruption, by the time of the cartoon's publication in 1937, the Tammany Tiger was fading fast as a metaphor, as well as a power base in New York City. The Winter scene cartoon w/Smith as well as the Tammany cartoon have both been inscribed to Copeland from Berryman and dated 1937. Some penciling on backs. Other Smith cartoon has handwritten pencil caption along bottom margin and is dated 1925. Artboards measure approx. 13.5x14.25" and show some scattered handling wear/aging and are Fine overall w/VF to Exc. art.
