Item Description
Shock Gibson is a comic book superhero who first appeared in "Speed Comics" #1 (Oct. 1939), published by Brookwood Publications (which was later absorbed by Harvey Comics). Offered here is the 1940 "Shock Gibson Volunteers" club kit, which consists of 3.5x6" mailing envelope w/typed recipient name/address. Left edge of the envelope is torn with majority of Shock Gibson logo missing. Three of the four sides of the envelope are split and remaining side is partly attached. 1" tears w/faint oxidation ring from button. Good overall. 5.5x8.5" typed welcome letter has facsimile Gibson signature and is folded as mailed w/some margin splits at folds. Letter originally had club button attached at bottom left, as indicated by rough area w/holes. 1/8" dark spot at top left. VG/Fine. 3x5" membership card has facsimile signature of Shock Gibson and nicely inked club member name (that matches name on envelope). Card has some lt. aging/wear but is VF/Exc. overall. All paper items from this club are very rare and the only example we've offered in our 52 years. All are actual examples shown in "The Official Price Guide To Pop Culture Memorabilia" by Ted Hake and comes with COA. 1-5/8" cello oval club button w/covered tin back and bar pin. Outer rim reads "Shock Gibson Volunteers" w/text above lightning bolt at center including "Honesty - Fair Play - Justice," which the club urged its members to practice. Glossy and Exc. Scarce.
