Item Description
8-7/8x9.5" sheet of trimmed vellum has pen and ink original art by John Holmstrom, an American Underground cartoonist and writer, known for providing the illustrations for The Ramones' albums "Rocket To Russia" (back cover) and "Road To Ruin" (front cover) as well as serving as the founding editor of "Punk" magazine. Holmstrom's art became the visual representation of the punk era, his work appearing in "The Village Voice, Heavy Metal, Spin" and "High Times" among other publications. Art was created for the "First Annual Sleaze Convention" booklet in 1976 and depicts "Punk" co-founder (and former "Spin" editor) Legs McNeil and Holmstrom, who were invited as special guests. The event was held in Wilmington, DE in Sept. 1976. McNeil is depicted holding a copy of the "Psychotic Issue" of "Punk" while Holmstrom is shown firing a dart gun in the air wearing a black leather jacket over a "Punk" t-shirt. A slingshot is seen protruding from his back pocket. Holmstrom has signed at bottom, adding "'76" date. Art has some white correctional fluid touch-ups and vellum has tanned w/age. Sheet has some scattered handling wear w/pin hole near top center. Archival tape repair on reverse to 1" tear at top right. Sheet is Fine overall, but art remains clean and Exc. Holmstrom's original art for the cover to "Punk" #1 from 1975 (from the Kurtzman Estate) sold for $19,120 at auction in 2014 as his art from the classic punk era rarely comes up for sale.
