Item Description
Each 15/16" in brass with both missing a tiny loop from top edge. First in gilt brass luster is DeWitt 1844-46 (a). This has a rose border obverse and plain border reverse. Much luster. VF. Second dated 1845 is DeWitt 1844-48. Finish is black, probably from being dug, but there is only microscopic pitting on the reverse. All remains easily readable. Shell medalets were a new novelty introduced in this campaign. Metal sheets were embossed and then joined leaving a hollow or "shell" center. Scarce.
