Item Description
11x14" original cardboard mount w/attached 8x10" original glossy photo. Both teams are shown in uniforms standing on ball field. ABC's players shown include HOF members Oscar Charleston and Ben Taylor as well as C.I. Taylor, Dizzy Dismukes, Candy Jim Taylor and Dave Malarcher. Giants players include Big Richard Whitworth and Palmer Kelley. Written on the reverse of the mount in pencil is the name "Kelley" and this could indicate that this very photo once belonged to the pitcher. The Indianapolis ABCs were one of the top teams of the day and won the "Colored World's Championship" in 1916. Oscar Charleston, one of the greatest all-around players in Negro League history, was in only his third season of professional ball in 1917 (having debuted with the ABCs in 1915). C.I. Taylor is considered one of the greatest managers in Negro League history, he managed the ABCs from 1914 until his death in 1922. Ben Taylor has a long and storied career in the Negro Leagues as both a first baseman and manager from 1908-1938. Border of the mount shows wear w/corner pieces off and a .25x2" sliver missing at bottom center. Photo has a few small emulsion flakes from top edge but remains glossy, clean and image is sharp. Mount VG, photo VF. Pre-1920 Negro League photos are rare and desirable. Also among the earliest known photos featuring Oscar Charleston and any photos of Ben Taylor are very rare, making this particular photo all the more desirable, especially to HOF collectors.
