Item Description
Trimmed to 3.5x4.75" glossy real photo postcard shows team in uniform posed on a ball field. Bottom has printed caption "Homestead Grays Of 1930 3-20-30" with photographer name at lower right "Harrison Hot Springs Ark." Four National Baseball HOF members shown are: Oscar Charleston, Judy Johnson, Smokey Joe Williams, and Cumberland Posey. Other players pictured are: Bennie Charleston (Oscar's brother in the only year he played in the Negro Leagues), Charlie Walker Jr., Raymond "Mo" Harris, William Ross, Buck Ewing, George Scales, Vic Harris, Jake Stephens, Oscar Owens, Lefty Williams, George Britt. This photo was taken while the Grays were in Spring Training in 1930. The team defeated the Lincoln Giants in a 10 game playoff for the Eastern championship.  Reverse has paper from scrapbook removal over most of surface. Left and right side margin edges have each been trimmed .25" (hence the SCG "Authentic" designation) though full image of all figures remain. Center has lt. horizontal emulsion hairlines but really only visible in reflected light. Image remains strong and distinct. This is one of only two known examples of this highly sough-after postcard and is also the first of three consecutive years of Negro League team real photo postcards issued by Harrison Studios. It was followed by the 1931 Homestead Grays and 1932 Pittsburgh Crawfords. The 1931 Grays postcard recently brought $23,000 at auction and the 1932 Crawfords realized $36,000. Ex-Richard Merkin Collection.
