Item Description
The "Superman" daily newspaper strip began on Jan. 16, 1939, w/a Sunday page debuting Nov. 5, 1939. Various newspapers across the country advertised the strip's upcoming publication in their respective papers. Offered here is a 16-5/8x21.5" full page ad from the Thursday, Nov. 2, 1939 issue of the "St. Louis Post-Dispatch," advertising the very beginning of the "Superman" Sunday page, as this paper ran the Sunday page from the very beginning. Text reads "Boys And Girls - See Superman In Color" w/additional promotional text reading "This Super-Hero Flies Faster Than An Airplane... He Can Outswim A Speedboat And Leap Over Skyscrapers. He Smashes Steel Like Putty And Runs Faster Than A Speeding Express Train. Enlisted On The Side Of Justice, He Crusades Constantly Against The Forces Of Evil." Large image of Superman appears w/informative text block stating that Superman would begin running Sunday in the "St. Louis Post-Dispatch." Page has very faint horizontal crease at center as folded and left margin shows very minor wear as removed from newspaper (not affecting text or image). Margins also exhibit some age tanning but overall, page remains very clean and would make for an incredible Exc. display if framed. Choice condition example of this very important historical piece in the history of Superman in newspapers, as the strip ran from 1939 until 1966, being renewed in 1977 through 1983. Rare. Franco Toscanini Collection.
