Item Description
2-1/2x3-1/2" photo on 4-3/8x5-1/4" mount.  Additional hand lettered text reads "Fired The First Shot At Ft. Sumter April 12, 1861 at 4:30 AM Friday. Committed Suicide At The Close Of War." Ruffin was associated with the "Fire-Eaters" a radical pro-slavery political activist group. Ruffin was active in the groups push for southern states to succeed the union and was instrumental in South Carolina's decision to do so in December of 1860. While best remembered for his political activities he is also considered the father of soil science in America and wrote extensively on the topic. Light overall toning of mount most notable at the edges. Exc. Rare.
