Item Description

1.25" button with W&H back paper in use 1900-1912. Rider in western garb on horseback with text  "Tracy/The Escaped Convict". While we don't know who, why or the exact year this button was issued, the escape of Harry Tracy and his eventual suicide to avoid re-capture was a media  sensation from the time of his escape June 9, 1902 from the Oregon State Penitentiary until he was tracked down, wounded, surrounded and killed himself on August 6, 1902 in Creston, Washington. Tracy was one bad outlaw said to have run with Butch Cassidy and the Hole In The Wall Gang and embarking on his own career of robbery and murder in the 1890s. Button was likely issued by a newspaper capitalizing on the mayhem of hostage taking and shoot-outs that occurred during his last two months as a convict on the run. Very minor surface scuff lines in reflected light. Exc. and displays Mint. Rare.
