Item Description
DC Comics. First published appearance of Golden Age Sandman (Wesley Dodds). Blonde-haired Superman on cover. Zatara and Slam Bradley stories. The 1939 edition was published April 29, 1939 and was released the following day, the day the Fair opened for 25¢ and was first only sold at the Fair. As all other comics of the era were 10¢, it did not sell well. Remaining copies were advertised in August issues of DC Comics for 25¢, but this was quickly lowered to 15¢. Those who had sent the full 25¢ were then sent a free copy of "Superman" #1 or #2 as compensation. "15¢" price stickers were placed over the original cover price of 25¢. Of these, there are four known sticker variations. A later edition of this book was published in 1940 w/a cover price of 15¢. Jerry Siegel stories. Vincent Sullivan cover. Joe Shuster, Fred Guardineer, Bob Kane and Craig Flessel art. Price sticker attached to front cover at top right. White pages. Great cover featuring iconic Trylon and Perisphere buildings from the 1939 New York World's Fair.
