Item Description
This is DeWitt 1872-16 and Hake #3006 which carries a $4,000 value in the Hake 2004 Revised Prices. The design of this brass shell is a much larger version of the Seymour jugate in previous lot #51. The piece is a large 1-5/16" with hole at top as issued. Regrettably there is some loss of the Greeley image detail but this is largely confined to the outer edges of his head and his facial details of eyes, nose and mouth remain clear. On his forehead there is a 1/8" sliver of emulsion gone but that is the only actual loss of the emulsion surface. The Brown image is bright and clear. Text below reads "For/President/Vice Prest" along with accents of cannon barrels and cannon balls. The opposite side of the piece has a large embossed portrait of Greeley surrounded by the text "For President Horace Greeley" and 13 accenting stars. Of the 50 Greeley items shown in Hake Book III only one (#3003) has a higher guide value than this rarity. Fine.
