Item Description
3-5/8x5-5/8". Front is addressed to "President Woodrow Wilson." Reverse has "Bellaire, Ohio" and a line to write date and form letter that reads; "Mr. President, I Am Unalterably Opposed To War. The German Submarine Warfare Does Not Threaten Me As A Member Of The Working Class. It Strikes Only at The Capitalist Class That Has Been Making Huge Profits By Manufacturing Instruments Of Death Or Taking Away Our Food And Selling It At Exorbitant Prices To The Fighting Armies Of Europe. War Is Murder. There Is No Lawful Or Lawless Method Of Murder. I Refuse To Permit A Lying And Venal Daily Capitalist Press To Stampede Me Into Murdering My Brothers In Europe." On April 12, 1914 Eugene Debs visited Bellaire, OH as part of a speaking tour. Debs was famously jailed in 1918 on counts of sedition for speaking out against the war. A .5" by less than 1" surface paper loss on front not affecting text. Extremely Fine w/reverse presenting NM. Rare. Ted Watts Collection.
