Item Description
19x24.5" elegant silver frame w/11-1/8x16-1/8" opening. "The Landmark Job Presses, Stateville" at lower left. An amazing survivor from a nearly forgotten 1896 campaign stop. Bold woodcut portrait of Bryan in bowtie at center flanked by text "In Statesville Wednesday Night Sept. 16th." Text at bottom notes that the "Hon. William J. Bryan, Democratic Nominee For President Of The United States Will Arrive At The Statesville Depot On A Special Train From Ashville." Last two sentences read "He Will Remain At The Depot Fifteen Minutes And Will Make A Short Speech. Let All The People Turn Out To See And Hear This Eloquent Defender Of Their Rights"w/"R. B. McLaughlin, Chairman County Dem. Ex. Com." Light brown stain at lower right about 1.5x6.5". A .5x1" loss at top right corner, .25x1"area of loss affecting the "G" in "Night" at right edge and a .25x.75" hole at center left not affecting text. VG displaying Fine. A newspaper article from Statesville's 'The Semi-Weekly Landmark' dated Sept. 8, 1896 lists an announcement for the tour from Ashville, NC to Richmond, VA but notes that other stops were unknown at the time. With only a little over 3,000 residents in 1896 not many of these posters would have been printed and this is likely the only example extant. This piece has been professionally framed to museum standards w/Tru-Vue glass that blocks 97% of UV rays.
