Item Description
17.5" tall doll has velveteen-covered plush body, composition hands/wrist cuffs, boots and head. Complete w/silk-screened fabric cape, felt belt and felt lightning bolt insignia on chest. Also comes w/extremely rare 1.75x2-3/8" string tag around neck featuring image of "Captain Marvel Adventures" comic book w/both Captain Marvel and his alter ego Billy Batson, who stands in front of a "Whiz" radio microphone. Back lists maker as J. Hirsch and Sons of New York. ©1946 Fawcett Publications Inc. Back also features promotional text mentioning "Captain Marvel Adventures" comic and gives brief history of the character. Tag shows some lt. handling wear but is complete and Fine/VF overall. Felt chest symbol has aged and faded slightly, as has belt and doll has some even aging to velveteen body. Composition head, hands/wrist cuffs and boots have had professional restoration; face has been restored to original appearance. As restored, head now displays Exc. Some small cracks at edges of wrist cuffs and boots have original Fawcett copyright stamps on undersides. Original painted boots seams remain. Cape features silk-screened details matching how Captain Marvel's cape appears in the comics and has braided cord neck strap which has small 3/8" tear where staple attached cord to cape. Cape also has 2.5" long streak of dark staining at bottom center, .5" wide at its widest. Cape is VG overall and rare. As restored, doll now displays Fine/VF overall. Rare and one of only a few known examples, even rarer w/cape and tag. This is the only known example of this tag. Considered one of the most sought-after Captain Marvel items. Only the second example we've offered in our 49 years, and the last example was incomplete (w/o cape, belt or tag) and in lesser condition and still sold for $7,729.
