Item Description
Large tiger-stripe print cotton clown costume w/elastic bands at wrists/ankles has large ruffle cuffs and measures 56.5" tall w/70" wide armspan and is 41.5" wide (55" wide across jodhpur-like leg accents). Inside collar has "Fiddlers Costumes - Los Angeles California" sewn-in tag and metal clasp closure. 1950s. Comes w/separate chintz-like ruffle collar w/Velcro fastener. We are unsure which Clarabell actor wore this particular outfit (Bob Keeshan played the character first before being replaced by Robert "Nick" Nicholson and later Lew Anderson), but this costume was worn on the "Howdy Doody" TV show and was also used for personal appearances by Clarabell later. Outfit has some scattered lt. aging w/some scattered lt. areas of staining on chest and exhibits some wear to printed pattern, but this appears to be as produced. Lower left leg has spot of staining. Ruffle collar has aging to inner collar. Fine overall. This outfit was first offered in Leland's 1997 "The Howdy Doody Auction" and comes w/copy of their auction catalog.
