Item Description
Double-sided 19x20.25" die-cut cardboard signed features Ogon Bat, a Japanese superhero created in 1931. Ogon Bat is believed to be the first Japanese superhero and is considered a precursor to later superhero characters such as the Japanese Kamishibai character, Prince of Gamma (debuted early 1930s) and the American comic book characters Superman (debuted 1938) and Batman (debuted 1939). Sign shows Ogon Bat standing over two packs of "Lotte" chewing gum w/his image on packaging. Sign was produced for the Japanese market and as such features all-Japanese text. 1960s. Brass grommet hole at top center for hanging display. Sign shows scattered handling wear w/creases and corner tip wear. Of note, tips of Ogon Bat's hand and foot are missing and his cape has 3.5" crease w/color touch-up on one side. Fine overall. Rare sign featuring this creepy skull-faced Japanese superhero.
