Item Description
Classic 15" tall battery-operated robot made in Japan by Masudaya/Modern Toys, 1965. This skirted robot is one of Masudaya's iconic "Gang of Five" robots, the last to be produced. Tin litho w/translucent plastic eyes and "ears" w/thin plastic mouth covering surrounded by plated metal. Wonderfully detailed lithography showcases various wires, gears and energy tubes. Swinging claw arms w/circular metal disc on front that is designed to be shot w/included 5" long pressed metal spring-loaded gun (one of at least two styles issued w/this robot) that comes w/the two original plastic rubber suction cup-tipped darts. Gun is Exc. When disc is struck, direction of movement is changed. Other actions include - eyes and "ears" light as does mouth (revealing soundwave image), arms swing as robot moves and claws open/close manually. Battery box has just small trace oxidation but all actions work. Body was lithographed on flat tin, which was then stamped in to shape, resulting in discoloration at shoulders where the tin is stretched to make the shoulder angle. This is a common issue w/these robots. Sides of "skirt" have some scratches where claw apparatus pin rubs when in use. This is more noticeable on robot's left side. Points at top of hexagonal head show some wear w/tiny scattered traces of oxidation. Plated metal around eyes, "ears" and mouth show luster loss and w/some trace oxidation at corner of mouth. Target disc shows scattered wear from use w/some lt. oxidation. Rest of robot's body has just lt. scattered wear in the form of small paint nicks/scratches, including .75" scratch on chest. Robot remains bright and glossy w/vibrant color. Fine overall. Amongst the most sought after of all vintage robots, each of Masudaya's "Gang of Five" robots are highly coveted and are the focus of most collectors due to their relative scarcity and exceptional design.
