Item Description
6x9.25" w/68 pages. Softbound. Title page reads "Illustrated Catalogue Of The Historic And World Reknown Collection Of Torture Instruments, Etc. From The Royal Castle Of Nuremberg/Amongst Which Will Be Found The Celebrated Original Iron Maiden (Eiserne Jungfrau) Lent For Exhibit By The Right Honourable The Earl Of Shrewsbury And Talbot/Now On View At 115 And 117 West 23rd Street Near Sixth Avenue, New York." © 1893. These torture instruments were purchased on behalf of the Earl of Shrewsbury by Mr. J. D. Ichenhauser, expert in works of art and curios by whom this catalogue was compiled. The entire collection was removed from the castle in April 1890 since which time it has been exhibited in all the principal cities of Great Britain by special permission of Lord Shrewsbury. This book catalogues 1325 articles, engravings, costumes and other instruments of torture. This was likely sold as a souvenir when the collection was on exhibit in N.Y. in 1893. Cover shows lt. surface dust and minimal wear to spine o/w Exc.
