Item Description
14.5x17.75" wood frame has matte with 10x12.5" opening revealing pen and ink drawing on white clayboard. Humorous scene includes large-breasted woman sitting between two men singing along with gramophone. Pen letter caption at bottom "When Humor Had Its Place In The American Scene" listening to "Cohen On The Telephone" "Eng. By John Held Jr. The Ghoul Who Digs In The Past." This piece was published on page 41 of "The Works of John Held Jr." NY: Ives Washburn, Publisher; 1931. Works in this book were from The New Yorker, Vanity Fair and Life Magazine. Held (1889-1958) is noted for his 1920s flapper cartoons as well as his parodies of Victorian woodcuts. Drawings like this were equal parts nostalgia and jazz-age sarcasm that also spoke for Held's generation. Well done and Exc. From the collection of noted comics historian Richard Marschall.
