Item Description
3-3/8x5.25" tan sheet has 3.25x4.25" image area with nice profile image of Uncle Sam signed at bottom "Homer Davenport 1911." Davenport (1867-1912) was the most prominent political cartoonist of his day and his work was reprinted throughout the nation. In 1896 when the Hearst Press became the de facto organ of the Democratic Party, Davenport's cartoons lambasted Republican candidate William McKinley. His most famous cartoon, after he left Hearst and became an admirer of Theodore Roosevelt, was "He's Good Enough For Me!" with Uncle Sam's hand on TR's shoulder. It was printed by the millions as a campaign document and poster. Davenport's depiction of Uncle Sam was possibly the strongest of all in cartoon history. Upper and lower left corner tips have light handling creases, scattered foxing, will matte and frame to Fine appearance. From the collection of noted comics historian Richard Marschall.
