Item Description
Single-sided 5.5x8.5" handbill for legendary Aug. 15, 1965 Beatles concert that took place at New York City's Shea Stadium. Handbill also announces concerts at The Academy of Music by Herman's Hermits, The Dave Clark 5, The Kinks and The Moody Blues and "The First New York Folk Festival" featuring Chuck Berry and Johnny Cash at Carnegie Hall. The Aug. 15 concert opened The Beatles' 1965 North American Tour and was easily the highlight of the tour, w/over 55,600 fans in attendance; the largest Beatles concert up to that time. "Beatlemania" was at its peak at the Shea Concert, causing John Lennon to proclaim "Shea Stadium...I Saw The Top Of The Mountain." Film footage taken at the concert shows fans crying, screaming and even fainting. The crowd noise was such that security guards were seen covering their ears as The Beatles entered the field. Presented by promoter Sid Bernstein, TV host Ed Sullivan introduced the band as they took the stage: "Now, Ladies And Gentlemen, Honored By Their Country, Decorated By Their Queen, And Loved Here In America, Here Are The Beatles!" The 30 minute, 12-song concert was a milestone in musical history as one of the first major stadium concerts. Handbill has two horizontal folds and some scattered handling wear/aging. Fine overall. Only a few examples of this handbill are known and as such, they rarely come up for sale.
