Item Description
Antonio Prohías (1921-1998) was a Cuban exile who came to New York in 1960. Between 1961 and 1987 "MAD" magazine published 241 of his cartoons. Much beloved today, "Spy Vs. Spy" is best-known for the constant struggle between the iconic Black Spy and his foe, the nefarious White Spy. What is often forgotten is that there was another spy, the curvy and voluptuous female Grey Spy, first introduced in "MAD" #73 in Sept. 1962. The strip was briefly renamed "Spy Vs. Spy Vs. Spy" and the character appeared sporadically, always besting the other two spies. Grey Spy's last appearance under Prohías was "MAD" #99 (Dec. 1965); she did not appear again until Bob Clarke and Duck Edwing took over the strip in 1987. This 12.5x20" thick artboard features pen and ink specialty original art depicting Grey Spy using the Black and White Spy as a wrap for her bare shoulders, their pointy noses tied together under her ample bosom. This art was created by the Spies' creator, Prohías, and has been inscribed "To Tamia & Gene - 'Mad-ly' Spy Vs Spy Vs Spy" and signed, Prohías adding "1965" date, dating this close to Grey Spy's last 1960s appearance. Artboard shows faint preliminary pencils for an alternate design featuring these same characters. Artboard has moderate aging w/a few scattered spots/areas of faint moisture staining along margins. VG overall, but art remains bold and still displays Exc. The most impressive Spy specialty piece we've ever seen by their creator.
