Item Description
c. 1910. 10-3/8x11-3/8” art board titled in pencil at top “Love Thy Neighbor” has six india ink panels. Husband points at woman on street and tells his wife who is mending sock “Peach Of A Dress Mrs. Sams Got On! Alice!" Wife yells “Where?” as she looks out window. She goes down to “5 Ave”, sees a well-dressed woman, goes in dress shop, and comes out all dressed up. Men stare w/one saying “Some Pip. Ah! Hem!” She walks in house w/fancy hat and short skirt saying “How About It Dear!” as husband falls over backwards saying “Alice!” Powers trademark tiny invisible people are in five panels w/names including: “Speed, Envy, Sale, Joy, Gloom.” Unsigned. Reverse side has piece of engraving slip remaining along w/”NY Journal” pencil note. Front lower left corner tip has small numbered sticker, trace of lt. dust soil and faint moisture marks. Overall VG, but art not affected and still Exc. An exceptional example by Powers, the first comic strip artist to work in color and a favorite of Teddy Roosevelt.
