Item Description
30-piece lot. All sent to Charlie Roberts. Letters range in size from 5.5x8.25” to 8.5x11”. All are signed in ink. Imprints include “IPD Publishing Co., Will Eisner Studios Inc., Memo From Will Eisner.” 20 letters are handwritten, five are typed. Dates range from March 20, 1972 to Dec. 23, 2000. Subject matter includes scarcity of Eisner's original art available, his work on new titles, comic convention appearances, answers to biographical questions and much more of a friendly nature. Most are signed “Will,” w/some are signed w/full name.

Dates and content include -

March 20, 1972 Typed Letter Signed (TLS). Thanks for your devoted interest, notes he cannot dispose of original “The Spirit” art as they are part of an estate.

April 27, 1972 TLS. Notes he cannot do “Spirit” sketch and will notify when “The Spirit” resumes.

Dec. 4, 1972 TLS. Notes no originals to be released at this time, maybe a private sale or two next year.

Jan. 7, 1974 TLS. Notes no interest in acquiring offered originals, “P.S.” originals available, a sketch is enclosed (not included in lot).

March 20, 1974 ALS. Thanks for sending his old originals and mentions that they encouraged his students.

April 27, 1974 ALS. Notes nothing  was available for trade “I Just Don’t Collect Anything But Will Eisner.”

May 6, 1975 ALS. Thanks for photos; wife thinks they’re beautiful “To Say Nothing Of The Subject.” Notes Eisner would try it to make Orlando Convention next time.

April 4, 1981 ALS. “Thanks For The Kind Comments On ‘Contract With God’ – Was A Labor Of Love.”

Feb. 5, 1982 ALS. Thanks for encouragement as “In This Field One Works In A Vacuum.”

Dec. 10, 1982 2-page ALS. Notes he cannot do specialty drawing due to completing “Last Chapters Of ‘Big City', The Impending Movie, Teaching Duties, The Magazine, Coloring Of ‘Life On Another Planet.”

Undated 1985 ALS w/Holiday greeting. Signed “Will & Ann.”

Jan. 9, 1985 ALS w/matching hand-addressed envelope. Notes enjoyment working in the “Sunbelt” and being still close enough to teach in New York at “SVA”; “Got The Best Of Both Worlds!!"

Feb. 3, 1988 ALS w/matching hand-addressed envelope. Llate “Happy New Year” greeting. Signed “Ann & Will."

Aug. 18, 1988 ALS w/thanks for pictures “Of Us At The San Diego Con. Here’s A Color Rough Of The Spirit” (not included in lot).

Aug. 14, 1991 TLS w/matching envelope. Thanks for “Ham Fisher Piece.”

Nov. 15, 1993 TLS. Notes surprise to see “Okay Comics Cover” and mentions that no pre-war “Spirit” art is available.

Aug. 12, 1992 ALS. Notes Eisner cannot look for art as “Brother Pete Is The Keeper Of The Treasure Trove.”

Dec. 18, 1996 ALS. “Delighted With The Delicious Gift - Our Love And Good Wishes For The Holiday And Beyond.“  Signed “Ann &Will.”

Sept. 14, 1997 ALS. “Kayo Kirby Was My Art. ‘Fight’ Comics Was Part Of The Fiction House Line. ‘Chuck Walker’ Was A ‘House Name’ Of Course."

Dec. 10, 1997 ALS w/matching hand-addressed envelope. Thanks for holiday chocolates “A Very Sweet Thoughtful Gift - Thanks From Us Both.” Signed “Ann & Will."

Nov. 20, 2000 ALS. Discusses “P.S.” magazine and Joe Kubert taking over the publishing, all old original art was destroyed.

Dec. 23, 2000 ALS w/Spirit sketch. Sends thanks for Christmas cookies “Soon As The Calorie Cops Let Me Out Of The Obesity Ward I Can Get Back To Work And Hopefully Run Into You At San Diego!” Top has tiny head sketch of smiling Spirit. Signed “Will & Ann.”

A few come w/original mailing envelope. Letters have a few lt. handling creases as mailed, o/w Exc. Next five signed pieces include boldly signed 1975 Post Office return receipt; mid-1970s handwritten letter w/questions answered by Eisner in margins (w/mention of Jack Kirby and Lou Fine); mid-1970s printed change of address postcard w/image of Eisner and his wife w/wagon of belongings; Aug. 4, 1988 signed “Bill Of Sale” for art purchase; and 2000 double-sided promo flyer for “The Spirit Archives” book boldly signed diagonally on reverse “To Charlie From Will Eisner.” Trace of minor edge wear, all five o/w VF/Exc.
