Item Description
All are c. 1960s-70s. Three letters range in size from 7x10.25” to 8x11”. All have ballpoint pen self-caricature profiles of the artist. Two are handwritten, one is typewritten. One is two sided single sheet, one is on two single sheets, one is on front side of single sheet. All are to Sy Schechter referring to pending trade of original art for a walking stick for Batchelor’s extensive collection. Content of note refers to riding to New York by steam ship, working on a book collection of his cartoons, working with “The News” since 1930. One self-caricature has the word “Peace” in his hair, another is titled “Me More Or Less”. All are signed “C. D. Batchelor”. Both cards have different images of murals designed by the artist. First is for the “Damon Runyan Memorial Fund Building” w/signed ballpoint pen note inside. Second is postcard of “Columbia” w/unsigned note on reverse noting the mural is a copy of the one in the “News” building. A few minor creases here and there, otherwise VF/Exc. Three letters from Mrs. Batchelor and two photocopies are included. Batchelor (1888-1977) was the editorial cartoonist for “The New York Daily News” 1931-1969”, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1937.
