Item Description
One of two designs from 1941 produced by Ostby & Barton of Rhode Island and used by dairies participating in the Superman Defense Club milk program. Ring top features rarely seen milk company initial "B" with diagonal lightning bolt plus eyeball design surrounded by accent lines. Brass top plate snaps off from the base and underside holds paper sticker picturing and reading "Superman." As typical, the extremely small final letter "N" of "SUPERMAN" is close to edge of brass plate and a bit indistinct to the naked eye but under magnification remains intact. The sticker grades fine which is typical for nearly all known examples. All brass surfaces are extremely clean and the ring top retains about 50% of the usually worn away original luster. Ring band also has nice glossy luster highlights at top of each side. Bands are perfectly smooth with nothing bent out of shape. Overall, exterior surfaces are VF but displays very glossy and more like NM. Of the 27 known examples, we know of only 3 that grade an unqualified NM and this example is among the 8 best condition known.
