Item Description
An excellent example, the highest grade of the few we've offered over 40 years. Ring is from 1941, produced by Ostby & Barton of Rhode Island, offered as a premium for the Superman Defense Club milk program, costing two bottlecaps and 10¢. The sixth edition Hake's Guide To Character Toys reports only 9 known; 4 Good, 4 Fine, 1 VF. The related ring (#1219) from the same promotion with a letter and eyeball on top has 27 reported known. Adjustable bands have perfect smooth curve. Top sides show star and planet. Snap-off brass top has letter "S," diagonal lightning bolt and extremely well-struck image of Superman from waist up breaking a chain across his chest with image surrounded by accent lines. To the casual glance, the entire ring has bright brass luster appearing Mint. Only under magnification is it obvious that some lustrous coating is gone, primarily from the ring edges beneath the top image area. Most would call this NM but feel Exc. is the more proper conservative grade. Condition with this much original luster positively exceeds VF. In the Hake Guide, the highest grade reported is VF with guide value of $20,000. We feel the rarity and condition of this example puts its value in excess of that amount. The consignor has agreed to a conservative minimum bid of $9,000. A rare opportunity to own one of the very rarest premium rings from the Golden Age in the highest condition grade known.
