20.5x25.5" framed/matted artboard has 14.5x20" image area in acrylic paint, original art cover of Sea Classics Magazine July 1972 issue showing the World War I German Cruiser Emden. Cover art image was flipped for the final published cover. Art was by Otto Kuhni (1927-2017), who started doing freelance work in 1962, including some projects for Mattel that predate his involvement w/Hot Wheels (for which he is predominantly known) in 1967. Kuhni also produced freelance work for Lockheed, McDonald Douglas, Max Factor, L.M. Cox, Challenge Publications, Galoob and Tyco among others. Lt. aging/wear. Exc. Comes w/reading copy of the magazine this art was produced for. Ship history: On November 9, 1914, Captain von Müller dispatched a shore party under Lieutenant Hellmuth von Mücke to disable the British wireless and cable station on Direction Island in the Cocos Islands. The station operators managed to send a distress call before being captured, which was intercepted by the Australian light cruiser HMAS Sydney. The Sydney immediately diverted to the Cocos Islands and engaged the Emden. Heavily outgunned and outranged, the Emden suffered severe damage to its engines, armaments, and steering. To prevent his crew from sinking with the ship, Captain von Müller grounded the shattered cruiser on the reef of North Keeling Island.
