13.75x20.25" nice quality wood frame with plexiglass holds 12.25x18.75" sheet of art paper with 4.75x6.5" image area near top with delightful image of Josephine Baker’s head done in pastel with some white accent color. Art is signed at bottom right corner in 2" area “Merkin”. Trace of lt. dust soil, paper is a bit rippled across blank top edge but image area is Exc. Richard Merkin (1938-2009) enjoyed much acclaim as a painter, illustrator, writer and educator. Merkin’s works reside in the permanent collections of The Smithsonian Institute, The Museum of Modern Art and The Whitney Museum among others. He was a regular contributor to The New Yorker, Harper’s, Gentlemen’s Quarterly, and other periodicals as well as a contributing editor to Vanity Fair. He was a great admirer of Josephine Baker. See signed LP from his collection #3075. Josephine Baker (1906-1975) was an American dancer, singer and actress who found fame in her adopted homeland of France. She was the first African American female to star in a major motion picture and to integrate an American concert hall. She was a major contributor to the Civil Rights Movement in the United States and was the first American-born woman to receive the French military honor The Croix De Guerre.
