Item Description
8x10" glossy has superb sharp image of seven players in uniform holding gloves and standing on grass in outfield of stadium. Reverse side has “Handy & Boesser Photographer’s Newark N. J.”ink stamp. c.1946. Left to right the players are: Jimmy Hill, Russell Dedaux, Leon Day, Fred Hobgood, Jimmy Brown, Len Hooker, and Max Manning. Photo has handling creases and aging but glossy, clean and Good. The team played in the second Negro National League from 1936 to 1948 and was formed when Abe Manley and his wife Effa Manley, founders of the Brooklyn Eagles, purchased the Newark Dodgers franchise and merged the two teams. Effa managed the team, making her the first woman who owned and operated a professional baseball team. The team won the 1946 Negro League World Series, beating the Kansas City Monarchs. Pitcher Leon Day had a perfect season in 1937 and also batted .320. Between 1935 and 1946 he appeared in seven East-West All-Star games and set a record by striking out 14 batters. In 1942 he set a Negro League record when he struck out 18 Baltimore batters in a single game. Pitcher Max Manning joined the Eagles in 1938 and pitched the final game of the 1946 Negro League World Series. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
