8.5x11" spiral bound soft cover book for “29th Annual Dinner Of The Indiana Society Of Chicago” honoring cartoonist John T. McCutcheon held December 14, 1940 at Stevens Hotel. Front cover has nice art of McCutcheon standing in center with numerous cartoonists applauding him with text just above his head “Greatest Show On Earth”. Book contains 44 pages w/ wonderful full page specialty art by numerous cartoonists honoring McCutcheon. Includes Milton Caniff, Chester Gould, H. T. Webster, Harold Gray, George McManus, Rube Goldberg, Rollin Kirby, Frank King, Frank Willard, Rudolph Dirks, James Montgomery Flagg, and many others. Covers are lightly tanned, front cover has moisture mark along right side edge with a few missing pieces in blank margin at upper right. First several inside pages have a few lt. moisture marks at right side but none affect art images. Overall cover is VG, inside is Fine/VF. Comes with 4 5/8x9.5" stiff paper die-cut program in shape of state of Indiana which is first we’ve seen. 10 pages includes front cover photo of McCutcheon from 1889 and back cover photo of him with George Ade. Inside front cover has photo of McCutcheon at age 70 and inside back cover has art by McCutcheon of dog for poem “McCutcheon’s Dog”. Rest of program has list of events including biography of McCutcheon. Lower left corner tip has a few tiny creases due to fragile design of program, otherwise Near Exc. appearance. Book and program had extremely limited distribution, likely not more than 100 or so printed. Wonderful graphics by top cartoonists.
