Item Description
Vintage (c. 1940s) glossy 8x10" sepia toned photo shows the Doles Dickens quintet.  Dickens began recording in 1940, playing bass with the Eddie South Orchestra.  He later joined The Five Red Caps in 1943.  In 1946 he formed his own jazz quartet (seen here) and recorded "We're Gonna Rock This Morning" and "Rock And Roll" in 1949.  Photo has James J. Kriegmann photographers mark (a mark that continues to this day with Kreigmann's son).  Dickens has signed in blue ink "To Conchita:  Your Column Not Only Makes You A Pillar Of Strength, But Tells The World You Have The Right 'Lines' Doles Dickens."  Dickens goes on to sign "Doles Dickens Quintet 'Music That Sounds Like The Dickens'" below picture.  Even aging with .5" crease in lower left corner.   Still displays VF/Exc.  Rare and rather obscure jazz autograph.  From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
