Item Description
James Doolittle (1896-1993) was an American aviation pioneer. A reserve officer in the US Army Air Corps, Doolittle was recalled to active duty during World War II. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for personal valor and leadership as commander of the Doolittle Raid, a bold long-range retaliatory air raid on the Japanese main islands, on April 18, 1942, four months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The attack was a major morale booster for the US, and Doolittle was celebrated as a hero. Lot includes 5x7.75" book page w/photo of Doolittle by Yousuf Karsh that has been signed in blue ink. Page is evenly aged and has scattered handling wear. Fine/VF overall. 3.5x6.5" air mail envelope w/"Major James A. Doolittle" stamp noting Doolittle's flight covering George Washington's route. Envelope has July 25, 1932 Washington DC postmark. Doolittle has signed in blue ink back first day cover stamp. Exc. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA COAs.
