Item Description
Full size suit jacket and slacks personally owned and worn by Kentucky Fried Chicken founder Colonel Harland Sanders. As the face of the famous fried chicken fast food establishment, Col. Sanders had an image to maintain. After being recommissioned as a Kentucky colonel (Kentucky's highest title of honor bestowed by the Governor and the Secretary of State to individuals in recognition of noteworthy accomplishments and outstanding service to a community, state or the nation) in 1950 by Kentucky Governor Lawrence Wetherby, Sanders began to dress the part, growing a goatee and wearing a black frock coat (later switching to his iconic white suit), a string tie, and referring to himself as "Colonel." As to his iconic white suit, Sanders never wore anything else in public during the last 20 years of his life, using a heavy wool suit in the winter and a light cotton suit in the summer. He bleached his mustache and goatee to match his white hair. It was his decision that whenever he might be in the public eye, he would be seen in his trademark white suit. Jacket has a label from tailor Merton Chesher of Toronto. Jacket measures 32" tall w/24" long sleeves. Faint .75" stain on left lapel w/some additional scattered faint stains. Fine. Slacks have matching Merton Chesher of Toronto tailor label on inside waist. Slacks measure 39" long. One leg has two 1" areas of stitched repairs (as Sanders was a frugal man and did not replace his suits w/great frequency) and scattered staining, most noticeable at crotch seam. VG. The string tie is a clip-on and was not personally owned by Sanders. Originally obtained from the Sanders estate. From the Bill Kurtz Collection.
