Item Description
1.25". c. 1933. For two decades after the Scottsboro Boys were falsely accused of gang raping two white women they were embattled in the court system of Alabama fighting for their lives. One of the results after years of trials, retrials, convictions and reversals was Southern juries became more open to African Americans. The case is an important early domino in the Civil Rights movement and a glaring representation of the injustices African Americans faced. This button was issued by the International Labor Defense (ILD) to help fund the cost of legal defense. The ILD was the legal arm of the Communist party who became involved when the NAACP moved slowly fearing an impact to effectiveness in the face of the sensational charges. This is the only button to feature all nine accused. Clean glossy surface with traces of wear seen only under magnification. This is easily the finest example of this typically faded or stained button we have encountered. If you must have the very best this exquisite example will surely satisfy. Essentially Mint.
