Item Description
Lot of 12 glossy 8x10" publicity stills for the first animated "Superman" cartoon released by Fleischer Studios on Sept. 26, 1941. Also known as "The Mad Scientist," story deals w/said mad scientist holding city in terror w/death ray weapon capable of toppling buildings. Daily Planet editor Perry White sends his two best reporters (Lois Lane and Clark Kent naturally) to cover the story, but Lois decides to get the scoop, taking private plane to scientist's secluded lair/laboratory where she is promptly kidnapped by the villain and his vulture sidekick. Superman saves the Daily Planet building after it is struck by death ray and then goes on to save Lois and capture the scientist. Superman is featured on three of the 12 stills (SUP1-39, SUP1-23 and SUP1-47), Lois is featured on one (her shadow can be seen on another) and the Mad Scientist can be seen on seven stills (his vulture sidekick is seen on three). As each still is numbered, at least 52 stills were issued by distributor Paramount Pictures to theaters. Of the 12 offered here, first Superman still features margin trim at top, only slightly infringing upon image area and in no way affecting Superman image. Rest have scattered handling wear (mainly to margins/at corners) and most are VF overall. These stills are very rare and to obtain this many at once presents a unique opportunity.
