Item Description
Original 8x10" glossy photo showing 17 team members in uniforms posed on a ball field w/spectators seated in the bkg. Lower right has photographers ink stamp "Ted Moss." The key player on this photo (standing at the far left) is Negro League legend and National Baseball HOF member Buck Leonard. He played for the Grays from 1934 to 1950. Other players include: Sam Bankhead, Luke Easter, Bob Thurman, Wilmer Fields, R.T. Williams, Luis Marquez, Garnett Bankhead, Clarence Bruce, Eudie Napier, Frank Thomas, Vic Harris. The Homestead Grays club is, perhaps, black baseball's most storied franchise. Formed in 1912 by Cumberland Posey, the Grays would be in continuous operation for 38 seasons. They won the Negro League World Series three times, the last of which was this team in 1948. This photo represents the final glory days of the franchise as the Negro National League would collapse in 1948 and the Grays ultimately disbanded in 1950. Photo has noticeable wear w/heavy vertical center crease and lighter horizontal center crease in addition to all-over handling crease. Currently mounted at corners to thin cardboard sheet for reinforcement but this could be removed if desired. However, photo remains glossy w/sharp and clear image. Good. Historic photo.
