Item Description
Forbes Field was a baseball park in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA., from 1909 to 1971. It was the third home of the MLB Pittsburgh Pirates and the first home of the NFL Pittsburgh Steelers. The stadium also served as the home football field for the University of Pittsburgh Panthers from 1909 to 1924. Baseball legend and Pirates Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente played 15 seasons at Forbes Field. The Pirates won three World Series while at Forbes Field and the other original tenant, the Pittsburgh Panthers football team, had five undefeated seasons before moving in 1924. Offered here is a 23.75x29x5.25" deep terracotta haunch from the facade of the building. When the stadium was demolished as plans evolved to build Three Rivers Stadium in 1971, portions of the building survived, including at least two of these haunches, which graced the exterior of the building, over the entrances. We know of one other example, and it resides in a museum, this being the only example available to the collecting community. At center are the letters "PAC" which stand for "Pittsburgh Athletic Company." These initials are surrounded by a wreath, w/a flower at the corner. Piece weighs nearly 80 lbs. The flat base opposite the peaked corner has 3" areas of chipping at corners and peaked corner has some scattered edge chips, most .5" to .75" in size. Straight portion of letter "P" has 1" and 1.5" chip to sides. VG overall, but a historic piece of Pittsburgh sports history. Due to size and/or weight of this lot, shipping charges may be substantial. Please contact us w/any shipping inquiries prior to close of auction.
