Item Description
7-7/8x10" original nice quality silver gelatin photograph w/photographers mark at lower right "G.T. Murray Boston Mass." Amazing images of baseball players and other men gathered in front of (and some sitting on) a steam operated tractor. Players were their team uniforms, some also wearing team sweater or coat. Standing out at the center of the image is Babe Ruth. Fellow Red Sox teammates in the photo include: George Foster, "Dutch" Leonard, and "Smokey" Joe Wood. Players from other teams include: George Davis/Detroit, Bill Sweeney/Chicago Cubs and Joe Burns/New York. Ruth was purchased by Boston in July 1914, however his initial stint in the Majors was short. Ruth appeared in just four games for Boston before being sent down to the minors on Aug. 5th. He did not rejoin the Red Sox until spring training of 1915. Many player names have been written in black or blue ink on top/bottom margins but none impact any of the images. Top margin has 1/8" border trim. Left center has 1" tear w/tape repair on the reverse along w/small bit of emulsion flaking. Most of reverse covered by paper as scrapbook mounted. Image remains clean and all is bold and distinct. Among the earliest known images of Ruth as a Red Sox player and in particular, the only example known of this exact photograph. An amazing and historic Ruth rarity. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
