Item Description
Lot of six stiff artboards w/original pen and watercolor art by Myron Waldman, an animator best known for his work at Fleischer Studios, working on Betty Boop, Raggedy Ann, Gulliver's Travels, Superman and Popeye. Outside of animation, Waldman partnered w/writer Steve Carlin (who created Rootie Kazootie) in 1940 to produce the "Happy The Humbug" comic strip, which was syndicated by the "New York Post" from Nov., 1946 to April, 1949 as a Sunday only strip which was later adapted for radio. In 1986, Waldman received the Motion Picture Screen Cartoonists Award, and in 1997 was given the Winsor McCay Award for his lifetime work in the field of animation. Artboards depict "Happy The Humbug, Pete And Reepete, The Cute Kid, Hunky The Monkey, Hocus Pocus And Jiminy Okus" as well as "Happy The Humbug And His Friends" showing Happy jumping rope w/two children. This artboard has staple at top left and some pencil notations. Moderate dust soiling and staining along edge, most not affecting art. VG overall, but art displays VF. Other artboards have varying degrees of wear/aging and are Fine-VF overall. Art comes w/four decal sheets, record cover proof slick and photostat featuring Happy characters w/art by Waldman. Slick is worn and just Good, rest are Fine/VF overall. Comes w/8.5x11" four-page "The Magic Christmas Window" promotion/publicity folder which has back page ad for "'Happy The Humbug'." VF/Exc. Also comes w/9x11.5" binder w/scripts for all but first (2-126) comic strip from Nov. 24, 1946 to April 9, 1949 for a total of 125 strips. These scripts include strip panel layout and typed dialog. Binder is missing front cover and some scripts feature notations throughout that include changes to text, additions, etc. Binder shows moderate handling wear w/edge chips. Good/VG. Script pages show varying degrees of handling wear, w/some having small edge tears/chips. VG-VF overall. An obscure and unique lot from the Estate/archives of Steve Carlin.
