Item Description
14.75x19.5” heavy art board w/hand inked margins has superb close-up action scene in India ink w/ Buck in outer space holding two disintegrator pistols and using one to blast coffin causing man w/helmet to fly out. Coffin is padlocked to cable from planet at lower left and small space ship is in sky at upper right. Title logo is a Photostat and caption reads “Buck Rogers Frees The Living Corpse From The Crimson Coffin In The Sky…”. Art is initialed “S.A.D.” at lower left and autographed in ink at bottom to noted fantasy and comic strip artist Al Williamson “Best Regards To Al- Steve Douglas”. Reverse side has rough ink sketches done by the artist to loosen up brush work including smoking rocket ship, man’s profile, crying eye, and shirt. Logo stats have tanning from glue application, half of price stat is missing, portion of Buck’s helmet has trace of white-out. Margins have minor edge wear. Art image and autograph areas are otherwise clean and Fine. This title, edited by Stephen Douglas and published by Famous Funnies, only had six issues between Winter 1940 and Sept. 1943. The printed comic books are relatively scarce; original cover art is virtually non-existent. First we’ve seen in our 47 years. A classic action scene prominently featuring one of the earliest and greatest adventure heroes ever created.
