Item Description
12.75x19" thin artboard has original pen and ink art by Dan DeCarlo (1919-2001) the cartoonist best known for developing the look of "Archie Comics" in the late 1950s and early 1960s, modernizing the characters to their contemporary appearances and establishing the publisher's house style. As well, he is the creator of the characters Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats and Cheryl Blossom. Offered here is DeCarlo's original art for the first page of the Sept. 1961 issue of "Pep Comics," #149. "Insult To Injury" story featured Archie and Reggie, depicting them in four panels, w/Reggie locking Archie in his room in the last panel. Of note, Archie's room is decorated w/framed pictures of DeCarlo's takes on the classic Universal Monsters - Dracula, Frankenstein, Mummy and Wolf Man and well as other monsters, noting the then current resurgence in the popularity of monsters. A picture of Veronica hangs above a "Riverdale" pennant. "Archie" logo at top left is a paste-over, but rest is all original art. Margins have some editorial notations, but art remains clean and Exc. overall.
