Item Description
There were six different boxed balsa wood models issued by Buck Rogers Co. of Chicago, IL., ©1934 John F. Dille Co. These were both sold in stores and offered as premiums. This lot includes single original 3x7x2.5" deep nicely illustrated cardboard box that includes illustrations of all six ships as well as a Buck Rogers portrait on top panel. Left side flap is missing end/edge and has has been reattached w/archival tape. Box has heavy and obvious overall darkening and other scattered wear. Good. Frame contains matted original 11x17" sheet w/choice graphics on front showing six different rocketships and has illustrated instructions on reverse. Folded as issued, sheet shows some wear at fold crease intersections. Clean and Fine overall. Wonderful design. Sheet lists all ships in set (from top to bottom) - "No. 5 Buck Rogers Venus Fighting Destroyer FD69Z, No. 6 Buck Rogers Pursuit Ship PS91ZX, No. 3 Buck Rogers Flash Blast Attack Ship TS310Z, No. 4 Buck Rogers Super Dreadnought SD51X, No. 1 Buck Rogers Battle Cruiser BC77Y" and "No. 2 Buck Rogers Martian Police Ship MP83Z." Completing this lot are seven professionally custom hand-crafted ships by Keith Kaonis, known for his one-of-a-kind wooden Disney and other folk art creations. Kaonis used better quality wood than the original balsa material used to make the vintage ships, and other than that, these are exact replicas in every detail to six shown on the aforementioned sheet. Seventh ship is modeled on a ship drawn by Dille but never released. This set was created about 25 years ago and is only one of the two complete sets Kaonis crafted upon request by two of the top Buck Rogers collectors. This is the first set to come up for auction since then. Seventh ship has some very scattered minor aging and top fin has repair to break. Still displays VF while rest are in truly stunning NM condition and make for a wonderful display.
